SC declines extension of deadline for conversion of diesel taxis into CNG

New Delhi, Apr 30 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Saturday refused to extend the deadline for taxi owners in New Delhi to switch from diesel to compressed natural gas. In December 2015, the Supreme Court had enforced a temporary ban on the sale of large diesel cars in capital New Delhi to combat toxic smog in the city. Taxi owners pleaded there is no technology available in the market that allows them to switch from diesel to CNG. Head of Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Sunita Narain, said the court was clear that only CNG cabs would run in the NCR post Saturday. The Supreme Court ruling last December came in the wake of a World Health Organisation study where Delhi topped the list of most polluted cities in the world.
