Makeshift cinema beneath a bridge helps Delhi’s poor unwind

New Delhi, May 27 (ANI): As the temperatures soar beyond the limits of human tolerance, Delhi’s poor rickshaw pullers, push cart labourers and junk dealers find comfort in a makeshift cinema hall under a British-era bridge. Under the 140-year-old double storied bridge, that has trains whistling past on the first floor and a crush of cars, scooters, and rickshaws on the ground floor, there exists a completely different world of impoverished migrant labourers struggling to stay alive in a city of more than 16 million. Mohammad Noor Islam, a junk dealer and one of the regulars at this cinema, said it helps to keep people away from vices like drugs and gambling. The dark and breezy interiors of the cinema hall also provide for a nice siesta for several of the daily labourers who come for a break from their labour intensive jobs on the city’s streets. On an average day, about a 100 people use the cinema hall to watch films, take rest and catch up on some sleep. Locals say it helps them stay away from being part of the underbelly of the city where drugs, crime and alcoholism is on the rise.
