Irom Sharmila to end 16 year fast on August 9

Imphal, July 26 (ANI): Human rights activist Irom Sharmila, who is on a hunger strike for the last 16 years against the AFSPA, on Tuesday announced that she would break her fast on August 9. Sharmila further said she would contest the Manipur assembly elections, adding that the charges of committing suicide against her have quashed. Sharmila went on hunger strike in 2000 in protest against the AFSPA, a law that gives security forces wide powers to search, enter property and shoot on sight. During her detention, she was force-fed by doctors through a tube going into her nose to keep her alive. Sharmila, known as the “Iron Lady” of Manipur, began her fast after 10 people were killed in a shooting at a bus stop near her home in Manipur. Activists blame the army for the killings but no arrests have been made in the case.
