Amarjit Balihar was an IPS Officer, native of Rohtas Bihar and was posted as Pakur SP for past 2 years. He was a Bihar Police Service (BPS) Officer, but was promoted to IPS Category in 2003 due to his outstanding performance.
He  was on the hitlist of Maoist ever since he took strict against them at Latehar 2005-07 . He was the DSP of Latehar then and was popular for his uncompromising stand against Naxalism. He took over as the SP of Pakur in May 2013.
Amarjit Balihar completed his education at Ranchi and his family now resides in Ranchi itself. He is survived by Wife, a son and two daughters.

As per reports, the Team of SP Balihar which was returning from a meeting in Dumka convened by DIG Priya Dubey. He left Dumka around 2:30 PM.
The incident happened at a place called Kathikund, about 35km from Dumka. Sources say that the details of SP’s travel was known to public, so Naxals had an easy opportunity targeting him.
Around 50 Naxals attacked him convoy and within 10 minutes killed 6 cops along with the SP Balihar.
