Nobody can forget the Dark Emergency Rule, says PM Narendra Modi

New Delhi, June 25 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said nobody can forget June 25 and 26 when the nation was turned into a jail and bound with chains of Emergency 40 years back. PM Modi said this while speaking at the launch of Smart Cities Mission and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation at the Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.

In a series of Tweets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his views on Emergency. “We mark 40 years of one of India’s darkest periods- the Emergency, when the then political leadership trampled over our democracy.

Inspired by the call of JP, several men and women across India selflessly immersed themselves in the movement to safeguard our democracy.

We are very proud of the lakhs of people, who resisted the Emergency and whose efforts ensured that our democratic fabric is preserved.

Personally, the Emergency brings back many memories. As youngsters, we learnt a lot during the anti-Emergency movement.

Emergency was a great opportunity to work with a wide spectrum of leaders and organisations fighting for the same goal- return of democracy.

A vibrant liberal democracy is the key to progress. Let us do everything possible to further strengthen our democratic ideals and ethos.”

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had imposed emergency in the country on June 25, 1975 after the Allahabad High Court and subsequently the Supreme Court found her election to the Lok Sabha ‘null and void’. Formally proclaimed by then-president Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, the decision to enforce the Emergency was taken without the approval of the then-union cabinet. W

ith protests and strikes sweeping the country after the Supreme Court’s judgement, the government officially stated that the country was ‘paralysed’ after a hard-fought war with Pakistan and justified the imposition of the Emergency by citing threats to national security.
