Transgender community conducts anti-sterlite protests in Chennai

Chennai (Tamil Nadu), May 25 (ANI): Members of transgender community took to the streets in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai on Friday protesting against the killings of 13 people in police action and seeking permanent closure of the big copper smelter run by London-listed Vedanta Resources, on environmental grounds. The protesters staged themselves as dead bodies as others wailed and raised slogans in front of their bodies. One of the protestors said, “We believe central government must take immediate action against this as the plant is causing terminal ailments like cancer for the local residents.” The plant has been shut for more than 50 days and had been ordered to stay closed until at least June 6, pending environmental clearances. Vedanta has denied that the smelter has been polluting the air and water.
