Trash Skimmers clean River Surface at popular Ganga ghats

Kanpur, Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), Jan 14 (ANI): Millions of pilgrims flock Ganga ghats every year to take a dip in the holy river, which is believed to absolve them one from all the sins. It is believed that people are cleaned physically, mentally and spiritually at Ganga Ghats in Varanasi, Prayagraj and Haridwar. Unfortunately, the pilgrims leave behind waste including old clothes, worship material and other garbage on the river banks. Many even throw solid waste into Ganga. Under the Namami Gange programme, the National Mission for Clean Ganga has been using the Trash Skimmer machines, a technology which helps clean the floating waste from the river surface at prominent ghats. At present, such machines are at 11 locations including Haridwar, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Kanpur and Vrindavan. As per Namami Gange’s initiative to clean the river surface, workers are also engaged to remove garbage from the riverside. With such initiatives, the people are also getting aware and believe the pilgrims should avoid throwing solid garbage into the river. To tackle river surface pollution with the arrest of floating material is one of the prime tasks of the National Mission for Clean Ganga. Besides the use of modern technology, the Namami Gange project focuses on strengthening public participation and improved inter-ministerial and centre-state coordination. However, the awareness among masses will only make the holy Ganga clean.
