Bicycle Industry facing shutdown due to less Bihari laborers

The Bicycle industry of Punjab is facing a closer shutdown due to shortage of laborers most of them are Biharis. The shortage of laborers has created a havoc among the employers. Many of them have come up with attractive schemes to lure workers. This includes Free Bicycle and Mobile Recharge Coupons.

It is notable that 90% of the cycle in Indian is manufactured in Ludhiyana. It is known as Bicycle Capital of India. There are about 5000 small and medium bicycle manufacturing units. Hero, Avon and Rolex are some of the top brands having setups in the city

The industry is facing around 35% shortage of laborers. The migration of labourers in Bihar has dropped by 26% in last 5 years. This can be primarily attributed to Incentives given by Bihar Government, Industrialization and more employment opportunities in Bihar. Another important factor is MNREGA.
